Severe Bleeding |
Cause:
Severe bleeding can be caused if someone gets a deep cut or their injury is large and breaks the skin. Extensive bleeding can lower blood pressure and decrease organ blood flow, which can potentially lead to shock. If someone is bleeding profoundly they need medical attention immediately.
Proper procedures:
1. Look around to check for immediate danger
2. Call 911 and get an aid if possible
3. look over them to see if there are more injuries, being careful not further injure them
4. sanitize your hands or wear surgical gloves, then clear the wound of any debris. Don't remove large objects embedded in the wound
5. use a sterile cloth to put pressure on the wound
6. secure the bandage and elevate the wound, unless a bone is broken
7. if the bleeding doesn't stop then put pressure on a pressure point (if the wound is near the arm then push on the brachial artery, if its in the leg then put pressure on the femoral artery)
8. if the injury allows, then help the person lie down
9. apply more bandages if needed, but don't remove the old ones
10. if the bleeding still doesn't stop then use a tourniquet, if you know how
11. stay calm and await medical attention (let the paramedics know how long the tourniquet was in place)

How to use a tourniquet:
1. position the tourniquet above the wound and tie it several inches above the wound using a square knot
2. add a windlass(can be a pipe or strong stick)
3. tie the loose ends of the tourniquet around the windlass using two square knots
4. twist the windlass until the bleeding stops, then secure it to the limb
5. be sure to mark when the tourniquet was placed
